Spiritual Blindness

I cannot begin to imagine how awful it would be to be blind. Can you imagine not being able to see God’s wonderful creation? Some are born blind and have never beheld the beauty of the trees, the green vegetation, the hills and mountains; all they know is what others have told them about the beauty that surrounds them. Although I have been in some very dark places I would certainly dread being in total blackness all day every day. Darkness is so bad that it was one of the ten plagues that Egyptians had to suffer through as God showed His mighty power in order to free the Children of Israel from bondage.

However, there are many in the world today and days gone by who have perfect eye-sight; yet they are totally blind. I am referring to those who are “spiritually blind”. God has given us spiritual light; as a matter of fact Jesus said he was the “light of the world”: (John 8:12) “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” We know that Jesus has ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God; so the question arises, “Does that mean that we are left with nothing but spiritual darkness”? Our God who is a god of love would not leave us so destitute! So what is the answer, what is the hope that people who have lived since our light is no longer with us”? Again if we would look to the words of Jesus: (Matt 5:14) “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.” To me it can’t be much clearer; Jesus has left it up to you and me to supply the world with “spiritual light”! You and I should not be holding back the “spiritual light” that so many so desperately need; we need to be sharing God’s “spiritual light” with as many as will listen to us. If anyone shows the least bit of interest in learning God’s will get out your Bibles and tell them as much as you can about the wonderful light that God has given to us.

Still others have heard the “spiritual light” provided by God, yet they don’t understand what they have heard: (John 1:5) “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” Friends, if you do understand the words of God it is your responsibility to explain it to those who “comprehended it not”.  You will even come across those who think of God’s “spiritual light” as foolishness: (1 Cor 2:14) “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” Of course it will be much more difficult to teach these than it is to teach those who are interested in learning about the “spiritual light; but that is not an excuse for not trying; God has supplied His “spiritual light” for the benefit of everyone!

I am afraid that those who are spiritually blinded do not understand how grave their situation really is; read what Jesus said: (Matt 6:23) “But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!”
(John 3:19 -20) “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  20For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.” Verse nineteen makes it very clear that there are some who simply will not receive the light; again I say that this not an acceptable excuse for not trying to share God’s “spiritual light”. God loves them just as He loves those who will receive the light He offers: (2 Pet. 3:9) “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

You and I have work to do; we need to be telling a lost and dying world about God’s marvelous light. I know that there are many in our lives who are living in spiritual blindness and it will be to our discredit if they never have the opportunity to hear God’s “spiritual light” just one time. Do you agree with me? We will be judged by what we have done with the light that God desires everyone to hear at least once. Think about this!
