disobedience to god

Disobedience to God is a very serious matter. It is a topic that deserves our most serious attention. The world is full of those who are disobedient to God and not a few who claim to be members of the Lord’s body. Since it is such a serious matter I will attempt to use as much of God’s very own words as possible.

The Bible says that disobedience to God provokes His anger: (Psa. 78:10) "They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;" (Psa. 78:40) "How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!" As we study the history of the children of Israel in the wilderness we learn that they time and time again did not keep their covenant with God and that they often transgressed against His law. The Bible says that this provoked God. Do you suppose for a single second that God has changed His mind regarding sin? Has God changed, or is God still provoked to anger when we sin? These are questions that everyone should answer, and do so without delay!

The Bible says that God will forfeit His favour because of disobedience: (1 Sam 13:14) "But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee." Here we see that Saul lost his kingdom because he did not keep the commandments of God. God has promised those who are obedient to the gospel “eternal life.” If we don’t keep the commandments of God and remain “faithful unto death” [Rev. 2:10] we can be assured that God will forfeit His promise of eternal life if we don’t repent [Lu. 13:3].

The Bible says that disobedience to God will cause Him to forfeit His promised blessings. Do you remember when Moses led the children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage they were promised that they would receive a land of their own, a land of “milk and honey?” As we have already noted they were disobedient in the wilderness. Did God say “That is alright; a promise is a promise?” No indeed, that promised blessing was forfeited: (Josh 5:6) "For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not show them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey."

The Bible says that disobedience is characteristic of the wicked: (Eph 2:2) "Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:" (Titus 1:16) "They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate." (Titus 3:3) "For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another." You profess that you “know God” but do your works say otherwise? The hypocrite will have no place reserved in heaven because such actions will provoke the anger of God.

The Bible says that man is prone to make excuses for her or his disobedience: (Gen 3:12-13) "And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. {13} And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat." Mankind has not changed; we still make excuses for our disobedience. Excuses did not work for Eve or Adam neither will they work for you and I. Disobedience will always provoke the anger of God. We don’t want God angry with us, do we? Obedience or repentance when we fail is the only thing that will work as prevention!
